Outer Cape Sights
Here are a few suggestions on places to visit on the outer Cape. Access and activities will vary according to the seasons.
Wellfleet
- Marconi Beach area
- Marconi site
- Site of first transatlantic wireless transmission from the US
- Overlook of ocean (east) and Cape Cod Bay (west)
- Atlantic White Cedar Swamp trail
- Enchanting boardwalk trail. Interesting environment for being so close to the ocean
- Marconi Beach
- Quintessential ocean beach
- Camp Wellfleet
- Former WWII training site for anti-aircraft gunners
- Some remnants of the camp and gun emplacements

- Best sunset views in Wellfleet
- Town beach sticker required only until 5 pm in the summer.

- Warm, gentle water
- Swimming not great within 2-3 hours of low tide (either side)

- Listen for ship’s bells to tell the time

- Three Sisters lighthouses – these low wooden towers are the second set of lighthouses at this site (the 1st set fell into the ocean). Originally on the bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the now sit about ¼ mile back
Truro
- Highland (Cape Cod) light
- Cape Cod’s first lighthouse (original tower constructed in 1797).
- Currently undergoing renovation – not open to climb – but an interesting visit to see the site and where the lighthouse was moved from in 1996. Nice views of Provincetown in the distance, the ocean, and the radome & “Jenny Lind” tower at the now-decommissioned North Truro Air Force Station, now the Highlands Center at Cape Cod National Seashore.
